Back in 1998, 30-year professional tattoo artist Emerson Forth was looking for a coil machine that married the perfect spring tension with reliable performance and weight distribution. He couldn’t find it, so he designed and holds a US Patent for the celebrated Hatchback (US patent no.8,356,533), respected and used throughout the world. Since then, Emerson has refined and evolved the model into the Hatch-O-Matic, Mini Jonesy, Shank and Spider Liner.
Fast-forward to 2022, when Emerson Forth finally created a tattoo pen that captured the exact feel he’d been chasing for years. He personally designed and dialed in a custom cam system, balancing the cam weight, motor speed, and torque to achieve a unique hit. Using an ultra-lightweight cam, Emerson engineered the pen to mimic the feel of a coil machine — something most battery-integrated pens can’t deliver.
The Sharp adapts to the cartridge you use: lighter membrane cartridges create more natural give, while stiffer membranes produce a firmer, more direct hit. This adjustable feel is a direct result of Emerson Forth’s design approach, making The Sharp one of the only modern tattoo pens that truly feels like a traditional machine.
