Tattoo cartridge membranes play a much bigger role in machine performance than most artists realize. While many cartridges may look similar, membrane tension directly affects how a tattoo machine runs, how much voltage it requires, and how much strain is placed on the motor.
A cartridge membrane has two primary jobs: blocking ink and fluid backflow, and allowing the motor to operate efficiently. Problems occur when membranes are too stiff. Excessively stiff membranes create constant resistance against the motor pin, forcing the motor to work harder on every cycle.
Over time, this added resistance can increase vibration, raise operating voltage, create unwanted noise, and contribute to premature motor wear.

Medium membranes move with the stroke of the machine instead of pushing back against it. This allows for smoother needle travel, lower voltage operation, reduced vibration, and less stress on the motor and internal drive components.
